Code of Conduct

At GCB Chicago, we prioritize safety and respect for each of our participants. As a participant, you agree to abide by our Code of Conduct to uphold a safe and fun environment for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment or offensive behavior of any kind. We expect you to be well-versed with our Code of Conduct when you arrive. Please review the code here:

CODE OF CONDUCT
GCB Chicago events are for everyone, of every race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or presentation, age, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, and religion.  We do not tolerate harassment or offensive behavior of any kind, in person or online. Examples include but are not limited to threatening verbal comments, offensive comments, deliberate intimidation, stalking or following, inappropriate or unwanted physical contact, any non-consensual sexual attention, sexualized images in public spaces, and harassing photography or recording.  Any behaviors, actions, or speech that result in making someone feel unsafe or unwelcome will not be tolerated.

We expect every person to take ownership of their own actions and language.  If someone lets you know, verbally or non-verbally, that they are feeling uncomfortable, check your behavior, apologize sincerely, and make a change.

Everyone has an absolute right to feel safe and respected at GCB Chicago. We all work together to create an environment of consent, where we respect each other and each others’ boundaries.
Please participate in creating a safe and respectful environment by modeling respectful behavior, and speaking up if you see or hear something that looks or feels wrong. If you observe someone who looks uncomfortable and you feel safe to do so, approach that person and check in with them (“Are you ok?”) and/or alert an event staff member or committee member so that they can help you intervene. Safety is a community-wide effort – let’s look out for each other.

Capoeira is for fun! It’s ok to take chances and try new things, be silly and joke around at the right time and place.  But before you come to the event, figure out how to do these things in a way that is safe and respectful of others. We believe that fun is maximized when respect and safety are prioritized.
The Staff of GCB Chicago reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary to enforce this policy. Anyone in violation of this code could be subject to verbal warning, be asked to leave the event without refund, banned from future GCB Chicago events/classes, and/or if appropriate, referred to law enforcement officials.

We expect all participants—attendees, teachers, sponsors, and volunteers—to follow the Code of Conduct during events and classes. This includes social events at off-site locations organized by GCB Chicago and in related online communities and social media.

Additionally, as of now, all participants are required to follow all safety and health-related instructions described in the Community Health Agreement*. Signing of the Community Health Agreement is necessary before participating in any GCB Chicago-related event or class.

Please bring any concerns to the immediate attention of event organizers, GCB Chicago instructors, any members of the Code of Conduct Committee and/or email chicagocapoeiracenter@gmail.com.

The Code of Conduct Committee will be introduced on the first night of the event and will be identifiable throughout the weekend by their yellow wristbands. The team is comprised of the following individuals (contact info can be found in the directory below):

Pedro del Cioppo Vasques (Fantasma)
Leah Neustadt (Perigosa)
Nedy-Fer Caraballo Planas (Gunga)
Ginevra Clark (Flor)
Nikki Olaya (Raio)

We thank our participants for your help in keeping the event welcoming, respectful, and friendly to all participants.
